About the KataviNational Park

Katavi National Park, located in the remote southwest of Tanzania, is one of the country’s least visited and most untouched parks, offering a truly wild safari experience. Spanning approximately 4,471 square kilometres, Katavi is Tanzania’s third-largest national park and is characterized by its diverse landscapes, which include floodplains, grasslands, woodlands, and seasonal lakes. The park is named after the legendary hunter Katavi and is renowned for its dense wildlife populations and pristine wilderness.
The park is home to large herds of elephants, buffalo, and prides of lions, along with thriving populations of hippos, crocodiles, and many bird species. Katavi’s tranquil atmosphere, combined with its abundant wildlife, provides an authentic and immersive adventure.

Katavi National Park

The Best Time to visit KataviNational Parkis during the dry season, from June to October. This is when wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot elephants, buffaloes, lions, and other animals. The park’s seasonal lakes shrink, drawing animals to the remaining waterholes, offering dramatic sightings. The weather is pleasant, with clear skies and lower humidity, ideal for game drives. However, if you prefer a quieter, off-the-beaten-path experience, the shoulder months of May and November can offer a more peaceful atmosphere, though some areas may be less accessible due to rainfall.

  • Large herds of buffalo: Katavi is known for its impressive buffalo herds, sometimes numbering in the thousands, creating incredible wildlife spectacles.
  • Predator action: The park boasts an abundance of lions and leopards, often seen stalking prey across the floodplains .
  • Hippos and crocodiles: Massive pods of hippos and enormous crocodiles can be found at the park's remaining waterholes during the dry season.
  • Rich Diversity: Over 400 species make Katavi a top birdwatching destination.
  • Waterfowl: Lakes and rivers attract species like the African Fish Eagle, especially in the dry season
  • Raptors: Look for soaring Bateleur and Martial Eagles across the savannah
  • Endemic Birds: Includes regional specials like the Pale-billed Hornbill and Yellow-breasted Apalis.
  • Migratory Birds: Katavi is a vital stop for migratory birds, ensuring varied birdlife throughout the year.
