About the Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park, located in southeastern Tanzania, is one of the country’s largest national parks, covering approximately 3,230 square kilometres. It lies adjacent to the bustling Mikumi town and is part of the larger Selous Ecosystem, making it a vital area for wildlife conservation. The park is characterized by a diverse landscape, including open savannas, woodlands, and wetlands, offering a rich habitat for various wildlife species.
Mikumi is often considered an ideal destination for those looking to experience a less crowded safari, where visitors can observe a wide array of animals in their natural environment. Its accessibility from Dar es Salaam and the stunning scenery makes it a popular choice for both local and international tourists.

Mikumi National Park

The Best Time to visit Mikumi National Parkis during the dry season, which runs from June to October. During this period, wildlife is more easily spotted as animals gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense. The dry season also offers excellent conditions for game drives, walking safaris, and photography, with clear skies and good visibility. However, the park is open year-round, and the wet season (November to May) brings lush green landscapes, fewer tourists, and the chance to see newborn animals. The wet season is also a great time for birdwatching, as migratory birds arrive in the park.

  • Elephants: Observe large herds of African elephants, often found near watering holes.
  • Lions:Spot pride of lions lounging in the shade or hunting in the grasslands.
  • Giraffes: Look for Masai giraffes browsing on acacia trees.
  • Buffalo:Encounter Cape buffalo, commonly seen grazing in herds.
  • Zebras:Admire herds of zebras, often found mingling with wildebeests.
  • Wildebeests:Watch for wildebeests, especially during their migration periods.
  • Rich Biodiversity: Mikumi is home to over 400 bird species, offering an exciting mix of residents and migratory birds.
  • Rare Species: Birdwatchers can spot unique species like the Lilac-breasted Roller and White-headed Vulture.
  • Wetland Wonders: Wetlands attract water birds such as African Fish Eagles, Great White Egrets, and herons.
  • A Symphony of Birds: Mornings echo with cheerful bird songs, creating a magical ambience
  • Majestic Raptors: Witness the graceful flight of powerful predators like the Martial Eagle and Bateleur.
