Ngorongoro Crater
About the Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of northern Tanzania, is one of the most iconic wildlife destinations in the world. Often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," it is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, with a diameter of about 20 kilometres. The crater floor is home to an abundance of wildlife, including the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino).
The Ngorongoro Crater offers breathtaking views, a variety of ecosystems, and the opportunity to witness wildlife in one of the most spectacular natural settings on Earth. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is easily accessible from Arusha, making it a popular stop for those on a Tanzania Safari.
Tours and Adventures
The Best Time to visit Ngorongoro Crater is during the dry season, from June to October. This is the optimal time for game viewing as animals congregate around the waterholes, and the weather is clear and dry. The cool temperatures make it a pleasant time for outdoor activities such as safaris and photography.
During the wet season, from November to May, the landscape becomes lush and green, and the crater is even more beautiful. This is an ideal time for birdwatching, as migratory birds flock to the area.
- Lions – Ngorongoro is famous for its healthy population of lions.
- Elephants – Large herds roam the Crater floor, feeding on lush vegetation.
- Rhinos – The Crater is one of the best places to spot endangered black rhinos.
- Leopards – Although elusive, leopards can occasionally be seen in the Crater’s forests.
- Buffalo – Commonly seen grazing along the grasslands of the Crater floor.
- Hyenas – Often seen scavenging, especially near the animal herds.
- Flamingo-Filled Lakes – Lake Magadi shimmers with pink as thousands of flamingos wade and feed—a magical, peaceful sight.
- Over 500 Species Recorded – A birder’s paradise, the crater’s varied habitats support an extraordinary range of birdlife.
- Elegant Crowned Cranes – Watch these regal birds dance in the grasslands, their golden crests gleaming in the sun.
- Raptors in Flight – Spot majestic eagles, buzzards, and vultures soaring above the crater walls.
- Colourful Woodland Birds – Spot turacos, bee-eaters, and sunbirds flitting through acacia trees in dazzling flashes.
